||
| The District of Tofino is located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, at the northern tip of the Esowista Peninsula. Access is via the Pacific Rim Highway from Port Alberni (approximately 140 kilometres.) Tofino was incorporated in 1932. Based on the 1996 census the population is 1,170. (Up slightly from the 1991 census population of 1,103.) Tofino was named, in 1792, in honor of Spanish hydrographer Don Vincente Tofino. Around 1875 the first trading post and hotel was established on Stubbs Island where it stayed until 1905 when the building was moved to the present Tofino township. Tofino was connected to the rest of Vancouver Island in 1959 when a gravel road was built to Port Alberni. The economy is driven mainly by tourism and aquaculture. The climate is mild and wet. Temperatures do not reach extremes due to the moderating effect of the ocean. There is considerable rainfall - especially in winter. Annual rainfall is approximately 3 metres or approximately 120 inches. |
